Rest by Design
Davina here! Vibe Manager, Executive Assistant, Administrative Manager and such over here in the TBD ecosystem.
As well as being a birth & rj advocate, I’m a huge human design nerd, and when I think about rest, I think about our unique differences and the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all path. Enter human design.
What is human design and how does it relate to rest?
Human design is referred to as the “science of differentiation” or often, the energetic myers-briggs. It is a way of looking at your blueprint and seeing how your energy flows, the patterns, tendencies, and pathways that it moves through as you experience life. It shows you how you can best make decisions, guides your interactions, helps you place your intentions - and my favorite - it gives you 100% permission to BE WHOEVER THE FUCK YOU ARE. Whatever feels natural, correct, and whatever your body wisdom communicates as correct for you, takes priority over the laundry list of societal standards we are primed to follow. Often times, we’re living in our design and not even realizing it so when we learn what our chart says, a lightbulb goes off that says, Hell Yea! I knew I did that for a reason! But other times, we can get so disconnected from what we need that we feel no connection to learning our design. This can leave us feeling deplete us and make rest really, really hard.
As Sabia has outlined this month, there are many, many forms of rest. But here, I’m going to talk about how rest, specifically, sleep, can look different based on the energy type in human design.
Energy Type: There are 5 in HD - Manifestor, Manifesting Generator, Generator, Projector, and Reflector. Your energy type is your aura, how you present in this world, how energy moves through you in relation to yourself and others around you.
Sleep can look different based on your type, but obviously every single one of us needs rest, so it’s just a matter of finding the most effective way to get it.
If you’re unfamiliar with human design, you can pull your human design chart here by entering your birth info to see what your energy type is.
Because of the layers upon layers within each design - it is, after all the science of differentiation - there will be so many nuances to the outlines below, so please take this with a grain of salt noting that we can really break down each sleep pattern so much more than just by energy type. However, generally, this can help you find a pattern of regulation.
Rest here is divided up by sacral beings and non-sacral beings. The sacral refers to the second square up from the bottom in the pictures below. It is a MOTOR, which means that it is a source of energy creation within. It is the GUT and will provide sacral responses - tuning into your intuition comes from your sacral. It representative of fertility, sexuality, and creativity and is your energizer bunny center (it is where your energy is replenished).
Rest for sacral beings (Manifesting Generators or Generators): These types can find that they need to expend their energy to its full extent in order to get a good night sleep. Sacral beings have an internal source of energy replenishment and that energy can continue to buzz, buzz, buzz until it gets used up, so if you’re having a hard time falling asleep, getting a workout in or engaging in something that requires your energy can help, but you want to be sure that you’re engaging in things that fill you UP so that your energy gets used up properly. Not being stimulated enough during the day can lead to trouble falling asleep, you may find that if your mind is still running wild at the end of the way when you lay down to go to sleep, getting back up to work on a project that excites you until you get tired will be more effective than just laying down hoping to fall asleep.
Rest for non-sacral types (Manifestors, Projectors, & Reflectors):
The three types above don’t have a sacral source of energy to tap into, but are taking in environmental stimuli all day that can cause burn out if they don’t build in space for rest throughout the day. Allow time to wind down at the end of the day. If you are around a Generator or an MG that is still buzzing, you may find it hard to find quiet in your system, so you can experiment with sleeping in another room, or using ear buds, eye masks, or even a weighted pillow on top of your head and chest. Whenever possible, spend some intentional time winding down in bed before you go to sleep, maye with a bath, reading a book, or watching your favorite show. Night sleep can also be aided by experimenting with slow mornings, daily naps, and other times that weave in rest to help expel the energetic download you get during the day.
But energy type is just the surface. Rest can be broken down so much more based on the intricacies of your chart. Factors such as your environment, your defined and undefined centers, your strongest sense, your digestion, and others, can all impact the way you rest. Perhaps you need to sleep in the same place every night, or you do better sleeping in late or getting up early, there are so many ways that our chart can tell us how our energy is best used and it doesn’t always fit the mold of what society tells us is correct. Lastly, human design is not a rule book, it is an experiment. Try things out and see what works for you! It is a guide to help you get curious and creative with yourself.
