Bio
Ama Merrell (they/she) is a birth worker and photographer in Chicago. As a birth worker, they have specialized in working with families who have experienced trauma and violence, as well as bereaved families. They began their photography journey through taking birth photos for their clients, and it has grown into their great passion. Ama loves documenting honest, raw, and soulful stories of parenthood and family. She is currently working on a photography and interview project called The Queer Family Archives, an opportunity for queer folks to create our own narrative of what family means to us. Ama is also working on a zine about rituals birth workers use to process their care work. These projects are open to all, so please reach out to get involved.
